In the mid-90’s, we participated in a U.S.-Australia exchange program that took us to the tiny, quaint beach suburb of Swanbourne in Western Australia. After an idyllic two year Australian life, we returned to our permanent home in Olympia, Washington.
Over the next several years, we assisted Australian friends who were posted to Tacoma, with searching for a rental home, registering children in school and many other relocation issues their Aussie mates had encountered.
During this time, friends with a newborn baby were provided a used cot and mattress by an established rental furniture company ;Seeing that, we decided to start a service that would offer newer, clean furniture and rental home-finding services for the few Australian Defence Force posted to Fort Lewis.
In 1999, Swanbourne Relocation Services was born and became a vendor with the Embassy of Australia. Within months, rumor spread within the ADF community that Swanbourne Relocation Services was providing all-new furniture and electronics; soon, our clientele of 3 grew to more than 30.
When the Embassy sent out an impromptu survey rating the products and services of each of the furniture vendors at that time, Swanbourne scored highest against other long-established, nation-wide rental furniture companies. Soon after, Swanbourne was approached by the Embassy to provide their products and services to the ADF posted to Oahu. We accepted this challenge to go “overseas” to offer furniture and services to the ADF in Hawaii, and it proved very successful.
Today, Swanbourne Relocation Services is licensed and active in many more states than we would have imagined, and we continue to expand into other states. Drawing on our own personal experience living overseas in different countries, we continue to offer relocation services to U.S.-bound families and take pride in helping them furnish their homes away from home.
